Rising talent was on full display in La Mirada as swimmers from across Southern California gathered for the SCS Spring Age Group Championships, delivering standout performances and impressive personal milestones.

Among the meet’s top performers were Irvine Novaquatics standouts Sahiel Pai, 13, and William Zhu, 9, who each turned in remarkable swims marked by significant personal bests and podium finishes.

Pai led the way with two individual victories, capturing both sprint breaststroke events. He posted lifetime-best times in the 50-yard breaststroke (26.62) and 100-yard breaststroke (57.37), with the latter representing a substantial improvement of more than a full second from his previous best set in December.

He continued his strong showing with a second-place finish in the 200 breaststrokes, clocking 2:08.40 and trimming another second off his prior time. Pai also demonstrated versatility in the butterfly, recording his largest time drop in the 200 fly. He placed eighth in finals (2:02.79) after an even faster preliminary swim of 2:01.87—nearly two seconds faster than his previous best.

Zhu, one of the youngest competitors in the field, delivered an equally impressive performance, achieving personal bests in every event he entered. His most notable improvement came in the 200 individual medley, where he finished second with a time of 2:21.27—more than six seconds faster than his previous mark.

He also made significant gains in the 100 breaststrokes, cutting nearly five and a half seconds to finish fourth in 1:15.36. Zhu added two more second-place finishes in the 50 breaststroke (34.62) and 50 butterfly (28.89), both representing strong improvements over his prior times.

The championships highlighted not only the competitive spirit of youth swimming but also the dedication and progress of athletes across all age groups. For many swimmers, the meet served as a benchmark moment—marking both personal achievement and the promise of continued growth in the sport.
