Cult-classic musical brings killer comedy, Broadway-sized spectacle and one very hungry plant to the local stage

Something strange has taken root at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts — and whatever you do, don’t feed the plant.

Little Shop of Horrors, the wildly popular musical comedy about a struggling flower shop employee and the mysterious plant that changes his life, has arrived in La Mirada in a new production from McCoy Rigby Entertainment.

Running through October 11, the production launches the theatre’s 2026–27 Broadway Series with a colorful mixture of comedy, romance, science fiction, rock-and-roll and just enough macabre mayhem to make it an especially fitting night at the theatre as Halloween approaches.

With book and lyrics by Howard Ashman and music by Alan Menken, the celebrated creative team whose work would later include Disney favorites The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin, Little Shop of Horrors has remained an audience favorite for more than four decades.

The story follows Seymour Krelborn, a down-on-his-luck floral assistant working on Skid Row who discovers an unusual plant and names it Audrey II after the woman he secretly loves.

There is just one problem. Audrey II is hungry. And fertilizer isn’t going to do the job.

As the strange plant grows, so does Seymour’s fame and fortune. But Audrey II’s appetite grows along with it, and Seymour soon discovers that getting everything he ever wanted may come with a terrifying price.

The La Mirada production embraces everything audiences have come to love about the show: its 1960s-inspired doo-wop and R&B sound, outrageous comedy, larger-than-life characters and, of course, an increasingly enormous Audrey II.

Early reviews have praised the production for both its spectacle and its performances. BroadwayWorld described the revival as a visually impressive, Broadway-caliber production, while LAexcites noted the humanity director Michael Matthews and the cast bring to characters that can easily become caricatures.

That combination is part of what has kept Little Shop of Horrors thriving for generations. Beneath the laughs, catchy music and carnivorous plant is a surprisingly recognizable story about ambition, love and what people may be willing to sacrifice when opportunity suddenly comes knocking … Or, in Seymour’s case, comes singing from a flowerpot.

The production is another major offering from the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts, which continues to bring professional theatre to the community while drawing audiences from throughout Southern California.

Little Shop of Horrors continues through Sunday, October 11, at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts, 14900 La Mirada Blvd. Performances are scheduled Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 2 and 8 p.m., and Sundays at 1:30 and 6:30 p.m.

The production runs approximately two hours plus intermission and is recommended for ages 8 and older. For La Mirada audiences looking for something funny, spooky and just a little bit twisted this October, there’s one important piece of advice:

Whatever Audrey II promises you — don’t feed the plants.
