The sights and sounds of marching band competition filled La Mirada High School Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 26, as the school welcomed student musicians from across Southern California for the 2026 La Mirada Field Tournament.
The Southern California School Band & Orchestra Association-sanctioned tournament marked a special milestone for La Mirada High School, which hosted a field tournament for the first time in roughly 20 years.
Bands representing Carson, Venice, Katella, Huntington Park and Anaheim high schools took the field throughout the evening, competing in classifications ranging from 2A through 6A. As the host school, the La Mirada High School Marching Matadores performed in exhibition and were not eligible for tournament awards. Their 8 p.m. performance concluded the evening’s field performances before the awards ceremony.
Although they were not competing for trophies, the Marching Matadores received a score and feedback from the tournament’s judges, giving students and staff valuable information as they continue refining their show for competitions throughout the fall season.
Long before the first band stepped onto the field, however, Marching Matador parents were already hard at work. Planning for the exhibition began months in advance, with parents gathering weekly to help prepare for the tournament — including assembling the program’s “Marching Kitchen,” an undertaking that became part of the behind-the-scenes effort required to welcome hundreds of student musicians, families and spectators to La Mirada.
Hosting a field tournament required plenty of work beyond the performances themselves. Students, parents, families and volunteers came together to welcome visiting programs and help stage an event that La Mirada’s instrumental music program had not hosted in approximately two decades.
The Marching Matadores — which include the marching band, drumline, pit and color guard — compete on the SCSBOA circuit and traditionally participate in competitions throughout the fall season.
For La Mirada’s young musicians, Saturday night offered something a little different: an opportunity to perform on their own field while welcoming fellow student musicians to their community.
