Norwalk–La Mirada Unified School District proudly announces the appointment of Tania Magaña, M.A. Ed. as the District’s new Superintendent following approval by the Board of Education during its meeting on May 18, 2026.
Superintendent Magaña brings more than 21 years of experience in public education and organizational leadership, along with a deep commitment to student achievement, equity, and community engagement. A bilingual and biliterate leader in Spanish, she has dedicated her career to ensuring every student has access to high-quality educational opportunities and pathways to lifelong success.
Prior to her appointment, Magaña served as Interim Superintendent for Norwalk–La Mirada USD, where she led districtwide efforts focused on instructional excellence, fiscal responsibility, student wellness, and strong partnerships with families and the community. Her leadership within the district spans multiple roles, including Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, Principal of Los Alisos Middle School, Assistant Principal, Intervention Teacher, and classroom teacher.
“Ms. Magaña has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to our students, staff, and community,” said Dr. Rob Cancio, President of the Board of Education in a joint statement. “Her visionary leadership, collaborative approach, and proven track record of success make her exceptionally qualified to lead Norwalk–La Mirada Unified School District into the future.”
During her tenure as Principal of Los Alisos Middle School, Magaña guided the campus to national recognition as a National Schools to Watch school and earned redesignation status. Under her leadership, the school’s counseling program also achieved the prestigious Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) designation. She championed initiatives that strengthened academic achievement, expanded Career Technical Education opportunities, increased participation in Visual and Performing Arts programs, and reduced suspension rates through restorative practices.
In addition to her educational experience, Magaña brings valuable private-sector leadership experience from the pharmaceutical and technology industries, enhancing her expertise in strategic planning, innovation, and organizational leadership.

Superintendent Magaña earned her Educational Leadership credential from San Diego State University, a Master’s Degree in Education from University of Phoenix, and a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies from Sonoma State University.
