When most people think about volunteering, they might picture serving at a community event, helping at a food pantry, or participating in a neighborhood cleanup. What many people may not realize is that another very impactful volunteer opportunity in La Mirada involves helping support public safety in our community.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Volunteers on Patrol program (VOP’s) gives community members the opportunity to serve alongside law enforcement personnel while helping enhance public safety services throughout La Mirada.
If you’ve attended Concerts in the Park, the annual 3rd of July Celebration, the recent Drone Show, or other major community events, chances are you’ve seen these volunteers in action. They help with parking, assist with traffic control, support community events, and serve as additional eyes and ears throughout our neighborhoods.
While they are not sworn deputies, Volunteers on Patrol provide valuable support that helps Sheriff’s personnel focus on critical law enforcement responsibilities. Their service contributes to the safety, organization, and success of many community activities throughout the year.
One of the unique aspects of the program is the opportunity for volunteers to receive specialized training and gain a firsthand understanding of how law enforcement operations function. Volunteers work in designated volunteer patrol vehicles, wear volunteer uniforms, and become part of a dedicated team committed to serving the community.
Perhaps most importantly, these volunteers are neighbors serving neighbors. They are individuals who care deeply about La Mirada and are willing to give their time, energy, and talents to help make our community safer and stronger. Their service often happens quietly and behind the scenes, but the impact they make is significant.
For those looking for a meaningful way to give back, the Volunteers on Patrol program offers a unique opportunity to serve while learning more about public safety and community partnership.
If you’ve ever been curious about the program or would like to learn more about becoming a Volunteer on Patrol, contact the City of La Mirada Public Safety Department at (562) 902-2960.
Volunteering takes many forms, and this is one that truly makes a difference. We are grateful for the men and women who serve in this capacity and for the positive impact they have on our community every day.
