Families, community members and supporters gathered at Neff Park on Saturday, August 29, as Malaika Ware officially kicked off her campaign for the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District Board of Education.
Ware, a mother of six and professional school counselor, is seeking the Trustee Area 6 seat in the November election. According to Los Angeles County election records, Ware will appear on the ballot with the designation “Mother/School Counselor.”
The Saturday morning gathering reflected one of the central themes of Ware’s campaign, the connection between families, schools and the broader community. Children joined parents and other residents beneath the trees at Neff Park as supporters gathered with campaign signs for the kickoff.
Ware says all six of her children have attended Norwalk-La Mirada schools, with four currently enrolled in elementary, middle and high school. Her campaign materials also cite her professional experience as a school counselor, a master’s degree in Counseling and Counselor Education, and previous experience as a high school track coach.
Her campaign is centered on “Parents • Accountability • Success,” with an emphasis on strengthening parent partnerships and helping students access opportunities ranging from rigorous academics and athletics to dual-enrollment programs that allow students to begin earning college credit while still in high school.
Ware has also announced support from La Mirada elected officials, including Mayor Pro Tem Steve De Ruse and Councilmember John Lewis.
The Trustee Area 6 race is contested. Los Angeles County’s candidate list also identifies Christopher Staples, whose ballot designation is “Parent/Business Owner,” as a candidate for the seat. Voters will decide the race in the November 3 election.
