The Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District celebrated the grand opening of a new state-of-the-art Band Room at Hutchinson Middle School on Wednesday, August 26, marking a significant investment in music education and the school’s growing performing arts programs.
Students, families, staff, District leaders and community members gathered at Hutchinson Middle School for the celebration, which included remarks from school and District representatives, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and an opportunity for guests to tour the new facility.
Funded through the District’s Measure G Bond Program, the project was approved by the NLMUSD Board of Education in March 2023. Nearly three years of planning, design, agency approvals, bidding and construction followed, with work beginning in September 2023 and substantial completion reached in June 2026.
Designed by Ruhnau Clarke Architects and constructed by Construct 1 One Corporation, the facility was created specifically to meet the needs of Hutchinson’s student musicians and provide a modern, dedicated environment for music instruction.
The new building features a spacious band room, three individual practice rooms, an office and specialized instrument storage. The additional space gives students greater opportunities for instruction, rehearsal, collaboration and performance while providing teachers with a facility designed around the needs of a modern music program.
District officials said the new Band Room also supports Hutchinson Middle School’s broader commitment to using music education to foster creativity, teamwork, self-discipline and personal growth. Beyond developing musical ability, participation in music programs can help students build confidence, responsibility and skills that carry into high school and beyond.
“This new facility reflects our commitment to providing students with learning spaces that inspire creativity, collaboration, and excellence,” Superintendent Tania Magaña said. “We are excited to provide our student musicians with a dedicated space that will support their learning and artistic development for years to come.”
The August 26 celebration marked more than the completion of another Measure G construction project. For Hutchinson students and educators, it represented a new chapter for a music program that now has a space designed specifically for students to learn, practice and grow together.
The new Band Room is part of NLMUSD’s continuing investment in school facilities and educational environments intended to support students academically, artistically and personally.
