PIH Health Whittier Hospital has become the first hospital in Los Angeles County and Orange County to implement the new SCOUT MD™ localization system, an advanced wire-free technology designed to improve the precision of breast cancer surgery while making the experience more comfortable for patients.
The hospital completed its first procedure using the upgraded platform on July 6, marking another milestone in PIH Health’s continued investment in innovative, patient-centered care.
Unlike traditional wire localization, which requires a wire to be placed into the breast before surgery, SCOUT MD uses advanced radar technology to help surgeons accurately locate breast lesions without the need for wires. The system provides greater flexibility in scheduling procedures while improving surgical planning and patient comfort.

According to PIH Health breast surgeon Dr. Rashi Singh, the technology represents a significant advancement for patients choosing breast-conserving surgery. “SCOUT MD is a huge step in the surgical treatment of patients who are interested in breast-conserving surgery,” Singh said. “This technology helps surgeons more accurately localize multiple lesions—even within the same breast—while supporting a smoother experience for patients throughout their surgical process.”
The upgraded system allows physicians to identify and map multiple lesions, including those visible only through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This added precision helps surgeons better define tumor margins while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.
Radiologists also play an important role in the process by placing a tiny reflector into the breast before surgery using imaging guidance. During surgery, the SCOUT MD system detects the reflector with radar technology, allowing surgeons to precisely locate the targeted tissue.
