Concerns from students in immigrant or mixed-status families were thoughtfully addressed during Cerritos College’s President’s Hour on January 20, as campus leadership emphasized its ongoing commitment to student privacy, safety, and support.
College President Dr. Jose Fierro reassured students that Cerritos College follows strict confidentiality policies and does not share student information with federal agencies except under very limited legal circumstances.
“The Board of Trustees has been very clear that we do not release student information to federal agencies,” Fierro said, noting that disclosures would only occur in cases involving valid judicial orders.
He also emphasized that campus police are present to protect students and the college community — not to police them.
“Supporting students who may be impacted by immigration enforcement is a top priority for both the board and the administration,” Fierro added.
To ensure these policies are properly upheld, Fierro shared that faculty and staff have received training on how to recognize valid judicial documentation and understand what information can and cannot be disclosed.
He also explained that the college uses a layered communication process to keep students informed while avoiding unnecessary fear.
“That balance helps keep students updated without creating alarm,” he said.
Campus Improvements and Construction Updates
Students also raised questions about ongoing campus construction, including the recent demolition of the bookstore.
Sydney Ramos, a soon-to-be transfer student, asked for clearer updates on project timelines and what students can expect moving forward.
Fierro highlighted recent progress, including the completion of the Health and Wellness Complex, and confirmed that the bookstore will be rebuilt near Old Falcon Way. He shared that major renovations are expected to be completed by the end of the year.
A Semester of Renewed Energy
Looking ahead, Fierro expressed optimism for the spring semester, noting that student attendance has returned to pre-pandemic levels. He encouraged students to take advantage of the many activities and opportunities included with tuition.
“Our goal is to make students feel welcome, safe, and supported,” he said. “That is our number one priority.”
As the semester continues, President’s Hour remains an important space for students to ask questions, voice concerns, and connect directly with campus leadership — helping ensure that all members of the Cerritos College community feel informed, included, and supported.
