The City of La Mirada joined communities across the nation in recognizing the contributions of older adults by proclaiming May 2026 as Older Americans Month during a recent City Council meeting.
The proclamation was presented to Dr. Cathy Alvarez in recognition of the important role older adults play in strengthening families, neighborhoods, and the broader community. The annual observance highlights the achievements, experiences, and ongoing contributions of older Americans while encouraging opportunities for engagement, wellness, and independence.
Older Americans Month was first established in 1963 and has grown into a nationwide celebration honoring the more than 60 million older adults living throughout the United States. Each year, communities are encouraged to recognize the value of older residents and promote programs that support healthy aging and community involvement.
In La Mirada, older adults remain an important part of the city’s civic fabric. Many serve as volunteers, mentors, caregivers, and community leaders, helping to enrich local organizations, schools, churches, and service groups. Their experience and dedication continue to shape the character of the community.
The city has long supported programs designed to enhance the quality of life for older residents through recreational opportunities, educational programs, health resources, and social activities. Facilities such as the La Mirada Activity Center and local senior living communities provide opportunities for connection and lifelong learning.
The proclamation also serves as a reminder that aging is not simply about growing older but about remaining engaged, active, and connected. Community leaders emphasized the importance of creating an environment where residents of all ages can thrive and where older adults are valued for their wisdom, experience, and continued involvement.
As La Mirada celebrates Older Americans Month, the city encourages residents to recognize the older adults in their own lives and communities whose contributions often occur quietly but leave a lasting impact.
Whether through volunteer service, family leadership, or decades of community involvement, older Americans continue to demonstrate that age brings not only experience, but also opportunity, resilience, and purpose.
