La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts welcomed audiences on January 31st for the opening night of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Stephen Sondheim’s celebrated musical thriller, which continued its run through February before closing to strong community response.
Widely regarded as one of Sondheim’s most haunting and musically complex works, Sweeney Todd explored themes of revenge, injustice, and the dangerous consequences of allowing bitterness to take root. Under the direction of Jason Alexander, the La Mirada Theatre’s staging delivered a gripping and immersive interpretation that leaned fully into the story’s psychological darkness while honoring its moments of razor-sharp humor.
Alexander’s vision was evident from the opening moments. Leading the cast, Will Swenson delivered a commanding performance as the vengeful barber Sweeney Todd, portraying a man fractured by loss and consumed by his pursuit of justice. Opposite him, Leslie Margherita brought dynamic energy to Mrs. Lovett, blending dark comedy with an undercurrent of menace that made her portrayal both entertaining and unsettling.
Among the production’s standout moments was the performance of Chris Hunter as Anthony Hope. His rendition of the ballad “Johanna” drew a notably strong audience reaction, highlighting both vocal strength and emotional sincerity that resonated throughout the theater.
