The Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District (NLMUSD) Board of Education has officially appointed a new representative for Trustee Area 6 following the resignation of longtime board member Dr. Lorena Vidaurre.
Dr. Vidaurre stepped down from her position effective immediately, citing personal reasons. Her departure marks the close of a distinguished career spanning more than three decades in education. In a statement, the Board expressed appreciation for her service, noting her steadfast advocacy for students and the broader Norwalk-La Mirada community.
“Dr. Vidaurre has been a shining example of dedication and perseverance,” the Board shared, extending well wishes for her next chapter.
Following the announcement of the vacancy at the February 23, 2026 Board meeting, NLMUSD initiated a provisional appointment process to ensure continuity in leadership. The opportunity drew strong community interest, with nine qualified residents submitting applications: Bright Agada; Jorge Alvarez; Esthela Chavez-Prado; Mark Copland; David Jimenez; Bo Kim; Julie Parra; Daniel S. Siwak and Christopher Staples. Because the seat was previously elected at-large, the application process was open to all eligible residents within district boundaries. The Board also clarified that beginning in November 2026, the position will transition to a trustee-area-based election.
After reviewing applications, the Board conducted a roll call vote to determine which candidates would advance to interviews. Three finalists were selected: Esthela Chavez-Prado; Mark Copland and Christopher Staples. Interviews were held during the March 23, 2026 Board of Education meeting, where each candidate had the opportunity to present their qualifications, perspectives, and vision for the district.
Following the interview process, a motion was made and approved to appoint Mark Copland as the new Trustee for Area 6. Copland will serve in a provisional capacity until the next election cycle in November 2026, when voters will formally elect representation under the district’s updated trustee-area system.
The appointment comes at a time of continued focus on student achievement, community engagement, and strategic planning within NLMUSD. With a new trustee stepping into the role, the Board moves forward with a full complement of leadership to guide the district through the remainder of the year.
Residents are encouraged to stay engaged with Board meetings and district initiatives as decisions continue to shape the future of local education.
