The City of La Mirada and the La Mirada VFW Post 9148 held their first of two ceremonies to honor, recognize, and celebrate veterans, active military service personnel, and members of military families On Saturday November 11 at the La Mirada Civic Center Plaza.
The La Mirada Veterans Day tribute began with the Flag Run/ Walk, prior to the ceremony. The Walk was open to the public. Participants gathered at UFC Gym and continued along La Mirada Boulevard to the Civic Center Plaza. The distance was just under a mile. American flags were provided to participants. The annual Walk and Veterans Day Ceremony is always free to the public.
Master of Ceremonies was VFW Post 9148 Commander Dr. Robert Cancio. The colors were presented by Southeast Academy Cadets and the Pledge of Allegiance was delivered by Young Marines, LCpl Kenneth L. Worley Troop. Keynote Speaker was major General James Collins who delivered moving stories of heroes both present and past.
The annual Salute to Veterans event was held Monday November 13 at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts. The event included military memorabilia displays, veterans’ resources, and a patriotic ceremony with military presentations, musical performances, and guest speakers. The keynote speaker this year was MSgt Marty Schafer, U.S. Marine Corps [Ret.] with a patriotic performance by the Marc Wood Band.
Lastly, the City honored local Veterans with special recognition on the City’s marquee located in front of City Hall. Residents were encouraged to submit the name of a family member who has served our country and lives in La Mirada. The names and service branches of local Veterans are rotated along with other messages and City information.
The City of La Mirada has two programs to recognize those in military service. The Military Banner program recognizes La Mirada residents, or their immediate family members who are currently serving in the Unites States Armed Forces. Blue Star Service Flags are displayed by families who have a loved one serving in the Armed Forces, including activated members of the National Guard and Reserves. The blue star stands for hope and pride for the troops, a yellow star stands for wounds sustained overseas and a gold star stands for sacrifice of life.
