A series of recent updates presented to the NLM USD Board, highlights meaningful progress across campus facilities, student opportunity programs, and districtwide engagement efforts reflecting a continued investment in both the physical environment and the future success of students.
Huerta Campus Exterior Beautification Nears Completion
Significant improvements have been completed as part of the Huerta Exterior Beautification Project, bringing a refreshed and welcoming look to the campus. Recent work includes a full exterior repaint, the installation of new exterior lighting beneath the main canopy, and the removal and replacement of aging planters.
In addition, crews demolished and re-poured the primary walkway, creating a safer and more polished entry experience for students, families, and visitors. The campus marquee has also been repainted, restoring its visibility and aesthetic presence. Collectively, these upgrades enhance both safety and curb appeal while reinforcing pride in the school environment.
El Camino Students Step into the Business World
On the academic front, El Camino High School students are making strides through expanded dual enrollment opportunities. This week, 25 students officially began the BCOT 248 Business Soft Skills course offered in partnership with Cerritos College.
The 15-week program is designed to bridge the gap between high school and the professional world, equipping students with practical workplace readiness skills. Upon completion, participants will earn three college credits along with ten high school elective credits, an achievement that strengthens both college and career pathways. This cohort builds on the success of last semester’s Counseling Dual Enrollment course, where 20 students earned college credits. District leaders expressed pride in the students’ initiative and enthusiasm, noting that these early college experiences provide a valuable competitive edge as they prepare for life beyond graduation.
Enrollment Season Sets the Stage for 2026–2027
The District’s Open Enrollment window for the 2026–2027 school year officially closed on January 31. Staff members are now carefully reviewing applications to ensure accurate placement and program alignment for all incoming students. Families can expect key updates in the coming weeks. Permit decision notifications will be issued by February 28, followed by the opening of registration for both new and returning students on April 1. By launching registration earlier in the spring, the District is giving families expanded access and additional time to complete enrollment steps. This proactive timeline also supports strategic staffing and resource planning well ahead of the new academic year.
Superintendent Engagement Across Education and Community
The Superintendent’s recent calendar reflects active engagement at both the local and regional levels. Regular weekly check-ins with Board Members continue to ensure alignment and transparency on district priorities.
Additional highlights include participation in the Scholastic Education Literacy Leadership Summit and the Los Angeles County Office of Education Superintendent Leadership Series. The Superintendent also attended the City of La Mirada Youth in Government Luncheon, reinforcing partnerships that connect students to civic leadership.
Family and community voices remain central to district planning through meetings such as the Parent Advisory Council and the District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC). The Superintendent also contributed as a speaker at the LACOE 2026 Differentiated Assistance Convening and maintained community presence at local events, including the Kiwanis Club of La Mirada Spaghetti Dinner.
Together, these updates reflect a district moving forward on multiple fronts enhancing campuses, expanding student opportunity, and strengthening the partnerships that support educational excellence.
