The Norwalk–La Mirada Unified School District continues to demonstrate strong forward momentum, as highlighted in its January 16 Board Communications from Superintendent Dr. Natasha Baker.
Throughout the past week, district leadership remained actively engaged across the region, participating in countywide superintendent meetings, policy committee sessions, regional education consortiums, and leadership gatherings. Superintendent Baker also met with parents, school leaders, advisory councils, and emerging administrators—reinforcing the district’s commitment to collaboration, transparency, and shared leadership.
In an important step toward workforce development, Norwalk–La Mirada Adult School will launch a new 100% online EKG Technician Training Program this spring in partnership with Cal Regional. Designed for current healthcare workers seeking rapid upskilling, the short-term program prepares students for national certification and offers a $500 tuition discount to improve access and affordability. With strong job growth projected statewide, the program aligns directly with regional healthcare workforce needs.
The district is also expanding parent leadership opportunities. Five Norwalk–La Mirada USD parents have been selected to attend a countywide, all-expenses-paid Migrant Education Parent Leadership Retreat in San Juan Capistrano. The three-day program will strengthen parent engagement, leadership skills, and collaboration in support of student success.
Internally, the district marked a major milestone with the launch of its inaugural Leadership Academy, Cohort 1, bringing together emerging leaders and community mentors from civic, business, nonprofit, and education sectors. Over the next five months, participants will engage in structured leadership development, culminating in a celebration event on June 1.
Adding to the district’s achievements, Waite Middle School has earned the prestigious National “Schools to Watch” designation, recognizing exceptional performance and continuous improvement. Waite now joins Benton, Hutchinson, and Los Alisos as nationally recognized middle schools within the district and will be honored at both state and national conferences this year.
Together, these initiatives reflect a district investing in leadership, career readiness, family engagement, and academic excellence—building a strong foundation for students and the community alike.
