Congresswoman Linda Sanchez paid a visit to City Council April 3, 2023, to deliver a sizeable donation for upgrades to Leffingwell Road in La Mirada.
Some of the improvements will be to convert hardscape to landscape, similar to what was constructed on La Mirada Boulevard and Rosecrans Avenue, continuing that project north. These improvements will help to beautify the City and make the roads safer, provide ecological benefits and overall improve the roads and give that area a general facelift. Sanchez was ready to lend a hand by contributing $2,500,000 for the project.
“We are about a year out from this project,” said City Manager Jeff Boynton, “Phase one is of course the design. Once the plans are completed and approved then we will send out for bids and confidently find a good contractor and bring them on board.” A project of this size would take about six to nine months, based on previous similar projects. It is estimated that construction will begin in March of 2024.
“The biggest challenge of any project is to find the designer. It is somewhat of a ‘simple’ project in the terms of being straightforward in design,” added Boynton. Median landscaping can often hinder traffic; how to draw irrigation to the site is part of the design and of course making sure it does not interfere with traffic signals, pedestrian traffic or adjacent street traffic.
