The Olive Grove News received the opportunity to sit in on the La Mirada Veterans Coordinating Council {LMVCC}. This group of veterans and residents is a partnership between the VFW 9148 and the City of La Mirada.
Their primary objective is to help coordinate and assist with the city’s three annual veteran’s events: Memorial Day Service at Olive Lawn Memorial Park; the Veterans Day Service at the Civic Center Plaza and Salute to Veterans in November.
This past Tuesday the main focus on the agenda was the upcoming Memorial Day Community Celebration to be held at Olive Lawn Memorial Park. The Service includes vocal tributes, special tributes to fallen soldiers, quest speakers, placing of memorial wreaths and flowers by VFW Post 9148 and Auxiliary, City of La Mirada, and community organizations including Ebell, Kiwanis, Rotary, and Union Army of the West.
The Service provides a venue for all ages to give thanks for our military’s sacrifices. The significance of the cost our soldiers have come to bear to preserve our way of life and the freedoms granted by their choices. Former Mayor and Councilman Larry Mowles remarked “We asked them to give their all…. they did. They ask to be remembered one day a year, and we will.”
The LMVCC strives to identify all active duty, reservists and National Guard community members and their families.
