The City of La Mirada held a Volunteer Appreciation Day on Sunday, May 19 in recognition of the efforts of local volunteers for their dedicated service.

Over 500 volunteers and their families enjoyed a day at the City’s Buccaneer Bay Water Park.  The festivities included complimentary admission, games, a gift of appreciation, live entertainment and a free Habit burger lunch.

“La Mirada’s volunteers do so much for our community,” says Mayor John Lewis  “The Volunteer Appreciation Day gives the City a chance to thank them for all the time and effort they give to making La Mirada an amazing community. Many thanks to all of the City Volunteer groups who do so much for our shining city on a hill.”

Volunteers included those from local schools and churches; youth sport leagues, service clubs, Theatre ushers, and many other organizations.

Other ways to volunteer for the city:

  • Volunteers In Action (VIA) is a program designed for teens and adults age 16 and over who want to give back to their community and help to sustain essential programs.  VIA application and background clearance required for participation. (Additional parental consent required for youth participants.)
  • The Leaders in Training (LIT) program is designed for youth ages 13 to 17 years of age. This program provides participants the opportunity to assist with various recreational programs and facilities within the City.  LIT application, background clearance, and registration required for participation.
  • Volunteers ages 13 and over can assist with a variety of special events throughout the year. Special Event application is required for participation. (Additional parental consent required for youth participants.)
  • Assist elderly, low-income, and disabled residents with landscape maintenance and minor home repairs. Monthly repairs may include painting, weeding, and planting trees.  Special Event Application is required for participation.  (Additional parental accompaniment/consent required for youth participants.)
  • Completed VIA, LIT, or Special Event applications are required and must be received either by mail or walk-in at the La Mirada Resource Center, 13710 La Mirada Boulevard, La Mirada, California 90638. Applications and supplemental questionnaire(s) are not accepted on-line, by e-mail or fax.

For more information about any of these programs, please contact: (562) 943-7277.
