It has been an exciting month here at Cerritos College! From our episode of The College Tour on the big screen to seeing progress in our investments for a green and upgraded campus, there are many things to celebrate here on campus.
Assemblymember Blanca Pacheco Presents $782K to Expand Child Development Center
On September 26 Assemblymember Blanca Pacheco delivered $782,000 in state funding to Cerritos College to support the expansion of the Norwalk Child Development Center (CDC). The funding is essential to increase our capacity; we currently have over 500 families on the waitlist. This funding plays a role in providing our community with world-class childcare services. It also increases parents’ access to quality education. We genuinely appreciate Assemblymember Pacheco’s support in expanding this vital resource for our community.
Cerritos College Celebrates Our Episode of The College Tour with a Blue Carpet Premiere
Cerritos College is featured on season nine of the Amazon Prime show, The College Tour. The Cerritos College episode features ten of our exceptional students, telling their stories of perseverance, dedication, and achieving their dreams. The campus hosted a blue carpet premiere on September 19, with an exclusive screening of the episode followed by a Q&A panel with our student cast. The students did an excellent job, and all of us on campus are so proud of their hard work. Please watch the full episode on our website to see what Cerritos College is all about. You can also watch it on Amazon Prime beginning October 17.
Cerritos College Invests in Energy-Saving and Carbon-Reducing Technology
Cerritos College continues to make investments to become a sustainable and environmentally friendly campus. In Summer 2024, Cerritos College will install solar panels in lots 1 and 10. Once completed, these panels will offset approximately 85% of the College’s energy consumption, reducing our carbon emissions and saving roughly $17 million in energy costs over the next 20 years. This is in addition to the 12 electric vehicle charging stations in lots 2, 4, and 10. Through their use, the campus reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 11,254 kilograms (about the weight of a school bus) over three years.
None of our sustainability successes would be possible without the hard work and dedication of our students, staff, faculty, and administrators. Cerritos College is proud to have exceptional employees like Jannet Malig, sector navigator of Advanced Transportation and Logistics. Ms. Malig was inducted to the Clean Cities coalition’s 2023 Hall of Fame and received the Benjamin Watson Inspirational Award for her achievements. Through her leadership, California high schools and community colleges have developed zero-emission vehicle career technology programs providing thousands of students the training and knowledge needed to enter the electric vehicle industry.
We have much more in store! Our Homecoming Game will be held on October 21 – I hope to see you there!
