The Carpenters 55th Anniversary Celebration is about to rev up in Downey, California from April 24 to April 27, 2024. It’s been 55 years, this April, since the Carpenters signed their first record contract. Downey is the hometown of Karen and Richard Carpenter. Fans from all over the world will be gathering in Downey to celebrate ‘all things Carpenters’ in honor of the 55th anniversary of their initial record deal signed April 22, 1969.
Organizers, Peter Dawe, and Greg Kuritz were part of the team that coordinated the 50th celebration in 2019. When I found out that the 55th was to be held in Downey, I offered my help to be their boots on the ground. Dawe, Kuritz and I have been working together over the last few years. We contacted then Downey Mayor pro tem, Mario Trujillo who helped organize a Downey committee composed of city staff, chamber of commerce, and key community members to assist. Former mayor Rick Rodriguez was such a help in 2019 for the 50th, he agreed to be the co-chair.
This committee has met regularly to plan events and projects over the four day event. This celebration is city wide, Downey Unified School District, Downey United Methodist Church, Downey city Library and local businesses including the Look Cinemas who will feature a very special showing of “The Karen Carpenter Story” with a Q & A after with very special surprise guest.
The owners of the Newville House are cooperating, with a tour of the Carpenters home on Thursday April 25th, where another special surprise will be unveiled. Middle school students who are in the district’s Musical Theater Conservatory will be the opening act for an acoustic concert at the Downey United Methodist Church on Thursday evening, which will feature Carpenter tribute artists.
There’s a lot going on! I am so proud of how the city, the school district, and the community has worked with the organizers to bring these events and projects together celebrating this icon musical duo. This is something their fans have wanted for a long time and it is wonderful to see so much of this dream become a reality.
The event begins Wednesday, April 24th with a Welcome Reception and ends with a banquet the evening of Saturday, April 27th. Organizers will be honored at city council meeting on April 23rd. For more information and tickets visit our website at carpenters55th.com.
As you can probably tell, I’m pretty excited about this!
Update: Fans and visitors will not receive a tour of the old Carpenter’s House, they will only be meeting and discussing outside the home.
